ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY FOR SLEEP APNEA

  • Do you feel tired and fall asleep easily during the day?
  • Does your partner say you loudly snore?
  • Do you grind your teeth while you sleep?

All these conditions can be the signs of a very serious medical condition - Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

WHAT IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. OSA happens during sleep when the tongue and soft palate falls to the back of the throat and completely block the airway. The person with OSA then wakes up, resumes breathing and falls back asleep immediately. Their sleep gets interrupted many times during the night, and in most cases the person is not even aware this ever happened. This results not only in a poor night’s sleep, but also can have serious health consequences like hypertension and heart problems.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • 1 in 5 adults have mild OSA
  • 1 in 15 adults have moderate to severe OSA
  • 25 % of middle aged men and 9% of middle aged women suffer from OSA
  • Untreated OSA can take 12 plus years off of your life

So, if you have OSA, it’s better know about it and manage it. Restful sleep plays a critical role in good health. With proper treatment you can finally get relief and have a good night’s rest.

WHAT DENTIST CAN DO FOR YOUR OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

As the healthcare provider dentists can examine, screen and test patients for obstructive sleep apnea.

If the test does show sleep apnea, the dentist works as part of the team with your medical professional in your diagnosis, treatment and continuing care. Depending on the severity of OSA there are several treatment options like oral appliance therapy and CPAP. Trained in oral appliance therapy dentists can help manage your grinding, snoring and OSA.

ORAL APPLIANCES

Oral appliances are custom fitted mouth guards. Oral appliance therapy is best indicated for people who snore, have mild to moderate OSA, are CPAP intolerant, grind their teeth. Dr.Krauss is trained in oral appliance therapy and familiar with the various designs of appliances. He can determine which kind of oral appliances is best suited for your specific needs.

HOW TO GET TESTED

Today there is no need to spend the night in a sleep lab to determine whether you have any sleep issues. Village Crossing Dentistry offers the use of home monitoring equipment that provides critical information about the intensity of snoring, apnea and bruxism (teeth grinding) events that occur during sleep. Now you can perform the test in the comfort of your own home. Our technician will explain how to apply the equipment. You will take it home and perform the test over night. After the testing has been completed, the device is returned next day and the data is downloaded. We can then upload the data to the certified sleep specialist and your primary care physician who review your test results and diagnose your condition. We then work together to make recommendations toward treatment.
